2007 Gents Prizegiving Dinner

The Prizegiving Dinner for 2007 was held in the Clubhouse on Friday 26th October when those who had been successful in the various competitions over the season collected their prizes. The Committee have decided that instead of winners being able to take the various trophies home they would all be kept in the Trophy Cabinet with plaques indicating the names of the holders.

Those at the Top Table were (from left to right):
Vice-Captain Ray Burnett Guest Speaker John Mercer Club Champion Gordon Sangster Captain Alan Matthews Secretary David Moir Honorary Vice-President Sandy Rogerson
Captain Alan Matthews opened the proceedings by welcoming all to the evening and introducing the guests plus the Top Table. |

The Guest Speaker was Mr John Mercer, a former headmaster at Belmont House School (for 26 years) in Newton Mearns and an experienced speaker on the Burns circuit who has appeared with John Cairney and John Currie. |
Top achievement of the year, the winning of the Club Championsip, went to Gordon Sangster. In his speech Gordon went through the usual list of people to be thanked but, as one of their number, his thanks to the Greens Staff was particularly pertinent!
Gordon had a most successfull year altogether as the photos below of various presentations being made to him illustrate.

The main prize was of course the Club Championship Trophy |
....but Gordon was also the Leading Qualifier for the knock-out stages. |
He was the winner of the Jimmy Heggarty Trophy, which this year reverted to being awarded to the winner of a special competition. |
...and finally, Gordon won the Medals Final Scratch competition.

Roy Vallance was a close challenger to Gordon for recipient of the most prizes, receiving the Cathkin Trophy (which is played for over 72 holes)...
...the Bill Gray Rosebowl (which is a 36-hole competition).....
....and the Autumn Meeting Scratch prize in addition to being runner-up in the Jimmy Heggarty.

The "most-nearly"prize, if there were one, would have had to go to Bobby Hamilton who was runner-up in the Club Campionship... |
...runner-up in the Cathkin Braes Trophy... |
.....and runner-up in the Bill Gray Rosebowl!

Also in the "repeat winner" slot were Willie MacKenzie (left) and Paul Kelly (right) who won the Presentation Trophy (the better-ball pairs competition)....
.......and who with Euan Gourlay (right) won the Triad competition (the best-ball from teams of three).

The MacFarlane Rosebowl for the 4-ball competition played over the winter was won by John Stirling and Chick McGoldrick
The Muir Cup, the knock-out singles competition played for by the top 16 in the May Medal, was won by Stephen Usher
. |

Colin Tate was presented with the Clubhouse (1973) Trophy, which is for the annual Stableford competition
The sister competition, the Braes Cleek (which is a bogey competition) was won by John Grant

Without doubt the trophy requiring the largest sideboard (if the winner were allowed to take it home!) is the Sir John Hunter Shield. Played for over 36 holes on the one day, this magnificent trophy was won by Mark Lironi.

The Westwood Trophy is the oldest trophy in Cathkin and is for the winners of the foursomes handicap knock-out competition, played over the summer. It was won, for the second time in 4 years by Ian Habbick and Craig Waddell
But after receiving it, Habbie was not certain he had the right trophy.
With a "recount" requested, the Captain checked the remaning trophies....
...and eventually Craig and Ian were able to display with pride the trophy they had really won.
| |
| The evening was brought to a close by Vice-Chairman Ray Burnett proposing the Vote of Thanks |
