2010 Burns Supper

The 2010 Burns Supper was held on Friday 29th January, in the Clubhouse as usual and despite the Clubhouse having been empty for most of the previous 6 weeks because of the weather there was a good turnout.

The Top Table were photographed as they prepared to make the customary entry to the hand-clapping of the audience.

Back Row: Vice-Captain Archie Harper, Eddie Meek, Captain Martin Hughes, and Kenny Wilson (Holy Willie's Prayer).
Second Row: Hon President Bob Crawford, Hon Vice-President Sandy Rogerson, Dennis Kelly (Toast to the Guests).
Front row: Piper Ian Tennent, Keith Taylor Captain of Cambuslang Golf Club, Stewart Smith (Reply on behalf of the Guests), Charlie Newlands (Immortal Memory), and John Belshaw (Tam O'Shanter).

The evening was opened by Captain Martin Hughes welcoming everyone and introducing the Top Table, during which time Dennis Kelly (right) obviously felt he had to make some last minute checks on his speech.

The Address to the Haggis was recited by Committee Member Eddie Meek, who had also made a large contribution to the planning of the evening.

The Immortal Memory was given by Charlie Newlands who is a Past President of the Bridgeton Burns Club and of the Glasgow Haggis Club. Charlie is a JP in Renfrew and has been awarded the CBE for services to the Town. Charlie gave an account of the Bard which was both informative and amusing.

Dennis Kelly gave a Toast to the Guests which was excellent, especially since he had
accidentally deleted all of his fund of after-dinner stories from his pc within the previous few days. His experience shone through however and he also pointed out that although he is the next door neighbour to Past Captain Ray Burnett he has a very different speaking style.

The Reply to Dennis was by Stewart Smith who originally hailed from Burnbank and is a Member at Hamilton Riccarton Golf Club. He has written comedy for BBC TV and is an experienced speaker on the "Burns Circuit", having been to places as disparate as the Czech Republic and Canada, and indeed had come direct from London to be with us. His hilarious stories and dead-pan delivery style were clear evidence of his experience.

John Belshaw, a Past Captain of Kirkhill, is no stranger to Cathkin since he has delivered Tam O'Shanter at our Burns Supper on a number of occasions. His use of the horse prop gets funnier each time he does it and once again he had the audience "rolling in the aisles".

Kenny Wilson is another Past President of the Bridgeton Burns Club and also of the Cambuslang Rotary Club.  He delivered Holy Willie's Prayer in his inimitable fashion, complete with candle and bible, and gave a performance of that poem which is impossible to improve on.

Vote of Thanks.jpg

Throughout the evening the company had been entertained by the singing of Campbell Kerr (centre), accompanied by Tom Daniels (right) on the piano. The piper for the evening was Ian Tennent (left) and the contributions from the three of them went a long way to making the evening so enjoyable.

The "death slot" of giving the Vote of thanks was filled as is traditional by the Vice-Captain, the position held this year by Archie Harper. Apart from at the AGM this was the first occasion on which Archie had spoken publicly at the Club but no-one would have believed that from his suave presentation, and he did an excellent job of identifying everyone who had to be thanked whilst containing the speech within a 5 minute period.
