The Glasgow Spring Meeting 36-Hole Stroke Play Championship was held at Haggs Castle on Saturday 12th April with 53 competitors. The top 15 would qualify for the GGU Match Play Championship to be held at the same venue the following weekend, joining the defending Champion John Laurie of Cowglen. The winner was Scottish Internationalist Jonathon King on 142 (2 under par) with Cathkin's Gordon Sangster 2nd on 143.
Gordon won through to the Match Play final the following weekend but only after having to call on all his skills and strength of character at various times, none more so than in the quarter-final. He was dormie 3 down to Graham Belch of Haggs Castle but squared the match then won at the first extra hole with an Eagle to Graham's Birdie!
In the Final Gordon was against last year's Champion John Laurie but played excellent golf to win 6 & 4 and receive the GGU Match Play Champion's Trophy. Gordon became the third Cathkin player to win this prestigious event, following Ian Mackie and Scott Jamieson, and this was also the second time a Cathkin player has won the trophy while Ray Burnett (who is the GGU Rules & Handicap Convenor) was Captain - Ray was Captain in 2000 when Scott won. | |
