Sections within Cathkin Braes Golf Club

There are several Sections within the Club.  Details of the three largest - Ladies, Tuesday Section and Juniors - are given below.

The Ladies Section

The Club’s very active Ladies Section has about 110 members and was established in 1907.

The many one-round competitions are mostly played on Mondays and Fridays, with tee times available in the morning between 9:30 and 10:30,  and between 12:00 and 12:30.  From 13:30 on there is a "Running Ballot" when Ladies arrange their own Tee times. There are also several Sunday competitions. In addition, several “fun days” are arranged on an annual basis, there are competitions specifically for those with a high handicap, and there are a number of Mixed Ladies/Gents Competitions (Greensome, Texas Scramble, and better ball four-ball).

There are two Ladies Club teams, which compete in the Park Montgomery and Greenlees Leagues. To access the page of the Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Association website, which gives details of the Greenlees including the results of matches played to date, click here.

For the ladies who are more interested in golf as a social event than as an opportunity for competing and who are free during the day, Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between  9:30 and 10:30 are the times which are most popular.

Social events include an Annual Dinner, a Whist Night, an annual Social Evening for which the format changes from year to year, and some ad-hoc events are spread throughout the year.

The Tuesday Section

The “Tuesday Section” is a very active group for Gents within the Club with over 100 members. It was originally set up in 1939 for people who worked on Saturdays and had Tuesday afternoons off. Now people meet and play at any time on a Tuesday, and any Member of the Club is eligible to join for a small fee (currently £12 a year), which is used to pay for the many competition prizes. In addition, any Section Member who gets a “2” on a Tuesday is given a golf ball.

There are numerous competitions throughout the year, with individual Stroke Play rounds (medal format, Stablefords, Bogey competitions etc), pairs and 3- and 4-man team competitions such as Texas Scrambles, and even an Eclectic competition running through the year where the only requirement for entering an improved score at an individual hole is to play at least 11 holes during the round.

Arrangements are very informal, with players arranging their own games and tee-off times throughout the day, but this does not make the competitions any less competitive!

The Section also has its own committee and social functions – as well as an AGM there is an Annual Dinner (usually with some musical entertainment from some of the members), a Prizegiving, and an Annual Dance.

The Junior Section

The club has an active junior section of over 100 members looked after by a junior convenor and small committee.

The club was awarded the Junior Charter by the Scottish Golf Union for promoting golf as a positive and beneficial experience for young people.

Monthly medal competitions in 4 divisions are held from March to October. There are also various matchplay competitions. A team plays in the Fleming Watson League of 10 local clubs.

Coaching sessions by the professional and his assistant are held during the summer months.
