Cathkin Braes Golf Club 2008 Burns Supper
The 2008 Burns Supper was held in the Clubhouse on Saturday 26th January. As usual the Clubhouse was decorated with paintings done by the late Jack McCallum, who had been a Member for many years, and one of these 8'x6' canvasses is shown below.

Captain Ray Burnett chaired the evening and added to the entertainment tremendously by injecting a variety of very pertinent Burns quotations as he introduced the various speakers and artists. His relaxed but efficient approach was a significant contribution to making the evening such a success.

After the Captain's introduction the evening began in the traditional manner with William Gilmour piping in the haggis. He was followed by our Chef, Michael, and Bar Steward David McCracken who ensured there were "drams" for the piper, John Belshaw (who gave the Address to the Haggis) - and of course himself - after the Address.

The Address to the Haggis was given by John Belshaw, seen here attacking "The Beastie" in his inimitable fashion. John also recited Tam O'Shanter, and brought the house down as he cantered around the lounge with a horse's head, complete with sound effects, protruding from between his knees.
Campbell Kerr provided the singing for the first time at a Cathkin Braes Burns Supper - but most certainly not for the last. His fantastic tenor voice was listened to in wrapt silence for the songs which were not "community" ones - and for these he encouraged great participation.

The Immortal Memory was given by Eddie Meek, a Member and Past Captain of Cambuslang Golf Club. Perhaps more importantly in the circumstances, Eddie is immediate Past President of the Bridgeton Burns Club and this showed in his excellent presentation. Starting with a series of funny anecdotes he then went on to a most learned but enthralling exposition of the Lives and Loves of Robert Burns

The Toast to the Lasses was given by Dennis Kelly, a close friend of the Captain and an accomplished After Dinner Speaker. He demonstrated this to such effect that the audience found it difficult to see him by the end of his speech because of the tears of laughter running down their faces. |
The Reply was given by our esteemed Honorary President, Bob Crawford, who also had the audience "in stitches" with his "true - but - amazing" stories of incidents related to the Ladies Section over the years and his own experiences (eg his first kiss from a young lady - which was in 1929!).

After the meal and the entertainment everyone relaxed even further to enjoy the remainder of the evening - particularly the Top Table who had done so much to make the evening such a memorable one.
The evening ended with the customary "Auld Lang Syne", with the hope being expressed that those present did not have to make their way home in the same circumstances as Tam O'Shanter is shown as doing below in another of Jack's paintings.
